The ARM Cortex-A57 Processor Uses a 16nm Design

ARM and TSMC have announced that their A57 processor is ready for production after only 6 months of design work. The new flagship chip uses FinFET Technology to achieve unprecedented performance whilst using less power.

The actual transistor size will be 20nm even though TSMC’s 16nm technology is being used. This leads to a mobile processor that should perform like no other currently available, with three-times the computing power of the current chips for the same battery life or five times the battery life at the same speed.

There’s no news on when the processor will be ready for devices, but expect it to feature in high-end handsets and tablets. [engadget]
