This case is pretty funny and a little sad. A Florida State University student ‘hacked’ a public wireless network to demonstrate the lack of security. The problem is that the Android app he appears to have used set the home page for all users to meatspin.com. He now faces a possible prison sentence.
This is hardly ‘hacking’ – using an app that many utilise to simply prank their friends doesn’t demonstrate the skill required to get into the Pentagon. It can however get you into a lot of trouble.
The student has been suspended from University following his arrest. Is this really as serious as everyone’s making it out to be? In my opinion, no. Okay, so what he did was clearly stupid and he should be punished, but getting the Police involved is too extreme. How do you feel about this sort of incident? [newsherald]
