Early iPhone Prototype Was a 5×7″ Tablet

Ars Technica have managed to get their hands on some images of a very early iPhone prototype, interestingly it’s basically a tablet. The images were obtained from an old Apple employee who wouldn’t reveal their identity for fear that Apple might come after them – fair enough…

The iPhone ancestor features an Ethernet port, two USB ports and even a DB-9 serial interface. Clearly these are only there to make software development easier. The screen is a curious choice though, it’s a 5 by 7 inch display. This to me indicates that an Apple tablet was probably on the cards for longer than most of us thought, as this prototype’s from the early 2000’s – the first iPhone wasn’t released until 2007. Head over to ArsTechnica for the full gallery.
