Death Star Like Laser Creates Artificial Stars

The very large telescope (VLT) at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) can fire a highly focused laser up to 90 kilometers into the atmosphere which reacts with a thick layer of sodium atoms left surrounding the planet by meteorites.

The laser beam reacts with the sodium atoms and produces a bright point of light which is then used by astronomers to calibrate Chile’s HUGE telescope, allowing the very best images to be captured by the VTL. The laser allows astronomers to work more accurately and efficiently, unfortunately it doesn’t have the power to blow up whole planets… Yet. [techradar]
