According to the president of Eidos, Ian Livingstone, the next Xbox will require a constant internet connection and will not be able to work with pre-owned games.
Livingstone spoke to MCV India saying that he doesn’t believe that the next gen consoles are ready for digital only distribution because…
“Broadband speed globally isn’t at a level that justifies digital-only.”
Then there are the supposed facts that the new Xbox will block pre-owned games and will require a constant internet connection.
“With the next Xbox, you supposedly have to have an Internet connection, and the discs are watermarked, whereby once played on one console it won’t play on another,” said Livingstone.
This is seriously going to affect people who would usually buy pre-owned games than getting new copies. Microsoft is supposed to be having a next-gen meeting in a few months where they will be discussing all of the various topics surrounding the console, so we can certainly expect this to come up again at some point.
