Real time 3D mapping with the Kinect

A group of academics have stopped prancing around in front of their Xbox Kinect and have come up with something quite remarkable.  Their amazing software allows the diverse hardware to map, in real time, the environment around it.  Please check out the video to see for yourself…



As you can see, the system is capable of mapping the 3D world.  It calculates the shapes and positions of objects in real time and then produces a map that can have be played with using computer physics.  In the above video, the software has been set to throw a sphere of tiny pellets into the environment every few seconds.  The pellets then scatter as if they have mass and obey the rules of our world.  They cover the floor and table as if they were real.  What other applications could this technology have?
