Google down for the US

Today Google.com suffered an outage across most of the US.  It is believed that this was caused by ‘route leakage’ originating from an Indonesian ISP called Moratel.

It’s quite incredible to think that one engineer failing to enter an IP address correctly caused one of the largest countries in the world to lose connection to the most popular website…

Luckily all was fixed very quickly once the online community had pointed out the issue to the appropriate authority.  How could this be avoided in the future?  The answer is that it can’t be avoided completely, engineers tasked with entering important data should double check before submitting.
